Backup fails "Insufficent storage available for backup" RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

i've installed the WHS2011, but i have a problem with backing up my Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (SSD 250GB) client :-(

I figured out that the "Backup Tool" creates a folder named "Drivers for Full System Restore" on the "system-reserved" partition and the backup does fail. :-(

If i create this folder before the backup starts, the backup will complete without any errors...

Is there a workaround (with "system-reserved" partition) to get the "client backup" into work without user actions or is this a known bug?

    thanks alot

  • Is this a question related to WHS2011? If so, the "Client Computer Backups" folder should be created on your D: Drive - ensure there is enough space to backup your client to that drive. If there is not, you need to use the Dashboard Move Folder Wizard to move that folder to another disk that has sufficient space. In any case, you should not be creating folders on the system reserved partition!

  • Hello Philip,

yes its a WHS2011 and the Client Computer Backups folder ist not the problem, the problem is present on the client (connector).

I can see 2 similar problems but the solution doesnt work for me :-(

  • Is the system reserved partition extremely small? Almost full?

  • Hello Ken,

the partition has a size of 100MB and 77 MB free.

i think this is normal, isn't it?

  • Hi, Ricardo,

If there is backup failure, there should be an error info shown in the backup history of the target client. What error it said?

    Best Regards,

  • Hello Junyonbg,

the Error Message is: "Insufficent storage available for backup"

  • Ricardo, I would take a look at the folder Drivers For Full System Restore from a successful backup, on a disk other than the system reserved partition. See how large it is. Usually the critical drivers (the contents of that folder) aren't very large; they might consist of one or two storage and network drivers. But I can see where a very large driver package could wind up causing the issue you're seeing.

  • Hallo Ken,

i've restored the files and it has a size of 206 MB (a little bit too much for a 100 MB partition)

But i figured out that the "Nvidia" driver has a size of 200 MB, but this is only the reason why it fails but not why the backup tool try storing this drivers to this partition....

  • Drivers are extracted and placed in that folder for every disk, and every backup. This is done to provide a place to get any drivers you might need for a restore.

nVidia is a particular problem because systems with an nVidia chipset tend to have very bloated drivers overall, due to the way components are integrated (i.e. you may not be able to get just the NIC driver out of an nVidia driver package).

All that said, I think more drivers are being extracted than are probably needed. Could you please file a bug on this on Connect?

  • Hello Ken,

sure i will but i don't know how.

Anyway i think it is not a good idea to "create" a folder each backup and remove it after backup on a SSD drive.

Because at some point in time you've changed the default settings for that
partition and assigned it a drive letter. If you had not done so, WHS would
not be trying to store the drivers on that partition. There is absolutely
no need to have a drive letter assigned to that partition. If you want your
problem to be resolved, remove the drive letter from that partition.

  • Hello Paul,

but whs2011 is not very inteligent :-( take a look at the screenshot (no driveletter assigned to "System Reserved" partition.)

But the folder will be created and filled up with garbage. :-(
