  Do you have a centralized backup device such as a home server, network attached storage device, an external hard drive or a folder share on another computer on your network?

  Is the external drive connected directly to the computer to be backed up? Which backup program are you using?

  I've moved this to the backup folder, assuming you are using Windows Live OneCare and have selected to configure backup in OneCare on a Vista PC. If this is your only PC with OneCare, you do not use Centralized backup. Select backup for this PC only.

  If you have multiple PCs using OneCare on the same subscription, the external disk needs to be shared and permissions configured to allow all users to change files in order for it to be used as a Centralized backup device.

  Go to Help in OneCare and show more topics. Type Centralized Backup in the search box and it will explain the process for setting this up.
