Invalid License??

Question
-
Yesterday Vista decided to tell me I have an invalid license despite having an authentic OEM version with disc and serial. It came with an assembled machine I bought about a year ago and have been using since then. I have made no major changes to the machine but this all began when I started using a new keyboard yesterday. I can't imagine that's the reason for this.

Hi Jon,
I found only a few incidents of that error, out on the internet, and thoes people that were able to resolve the issue said that the error was fixed after Finding and Cleaning out a Malware infection. So my suggestion was going to be that you run a couple of Anti-Virus Scans and see if you could find the bug that's causing that wierd error. But if you have already tried this, reinstall may be your next option.
Before you reinstall, you may want to have a look at the forum where people have reported fixing the error.

Update!
I finally solved the problem. After using pretty much every scanner I could find and resigning myself to having to buy a new hard drive, I came across Combofix. It found rootkits and removed them first time. Windows is now activated again and all other functions are normal. So if anybody is having a similar problem to me, ComboFix is free and worth trying.

Hello jon27,
It appears that your Vista needs to be Reactivated.
You may have not done any major hardware changes, but as far as reactivation is concerned, hardware changes are cumulative. Meaning a number of minor changes eventually add up to a major change. In addition, it has been found that some Drivers will change the hardware ID of the hardware that it is controlling which makes Vista think that piece of hardware had been changed. Microsoft is working with the hardware makers so there is less chance for there drivers to cause this.
To resolve your issue, you will need to Activate by Phone.
To Activate by Phone:
a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type slui.exe 4 in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.
b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type: c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enter and follow steps to Activate over the Phone.
NOTE: The important thing to this process is that you may need to talk to a Live Activation Rep. When you first call, you will be interacting with an Automated Voice, either select the option to talk to a Live Rep or if there is no option, do not enter any numbers. This should force the automated voice to transfer you to a Live Rep.
Hope that helps,
Darin MS

Thank you for your reply, Darin. I have already tried these things, the problem is that something appears to have gone wrong. The page for other methods of authentication shows no Authentication Id. There is a space where obviously the 9 sets of 6 digits should go, with the corresponding empty boxes below them, but the numbers themselves are not there. I cannot do anything until these numbers appear. I have even tried a clean reinstall using the disk but it refuses to recognise any disk drive, in spite of the fact that it is already installed on the C drive, I really don't know what I can do now. Help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon.Tuesday, April 14, 2009 9:41 AM -
Hi Jon,
OK, that's not too hard to fix. What you need to do is re-enter your same Product Key into Vista. This will force Vista to re-generate that big long number.
To do that:
1) Click the 'Start' button
2) Righ-click 'Computer' and select 'Properties'
3) In the window that comes up, click "Change Product Key" and enter the same Product Key as your Vista is already using.
4) The 'Change Product Key Wizard' may attempt to Activate you over the Internet and the Activation may fail. Don't worry, just follow the wizard to the end and then try the Activate by Phone steps from my first post.
Thank you,
Darin MS

Thank you for your help but I'm afraid that doesn't work either. It attempts to activate, then gives me an error message 0x80070565, Maximum number of secrets exceeded on this machine (whatever that means), then the phone authentication page is still missing the ID number.Tuesday, April 14, 2009 8:37 PM

Hi Jon27,
What happens when you try to Change the Product Key?

Trying to Change the Product Key produces the error I mentioned above. It accepts the serial number then attempts to activate and gives me that strange error message. The necessary ID number does not appear after doing this.Wednesday, April 15, 2009 9:27 AM

Hi Jon,
Try the first (below) set of steps and then try Activating by Phone. If the Long number is still missing, try the second set of steps.
1) Click the Start button
2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field
3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe
4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms
6) Hit the Enter key
7) Reboot 2 times
1) Click the Start button
2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field
3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe
4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Reboot Twice
12) You may be asked to re-enter your Product Key
Thanks,
Darin MS

I'm afraid neither of those worked. In the dos entry I came across "Maximum number of secrets..." again. What does this mean? It also didn't recognise the command ilc. My OS is in Spanish but I don't think that makes any difference as all the coding is the same, at least I've never come across any differences before. All the cmd prompts are the same as far as I know.
The second option was all typed in fine but after putting in the serial again I got the "maximum number of secrets exceeded" message and no ID number again.
I getting tempted to just nuke the hard drive and reinstall from there.Wednesday, April 15, 2009 9:24 PM -
Hi jon,
I am unfarmiliar with that error message, but it appears to be central to the issue. I have escalated for any information as to what that error means and how it may be resolved. I will post as soon as I have more information.

Thank you Darin.
I have been running Norton recovery tools, spybot, malawarebytes and anything else I can find but I cannot find any virus. Please let me know when you can as I am going to wipe and reinstall as soon as possible if I can't find another solution.
Thanking you,

Hi Jon27,
I also had a 2 day battle to re-gain my genuine copy of vista.
But I had to go one-step further to rid my virus.
I had the error 0x80070565 and "maximum number of secrets exceeded" message and no ID number.
It also said my copy of windows is not genuine.
I have a legit copy of vista home. I tried Malawarebytes Anti-malware and it locked up halfway through.
Then I tried ComboFix and I was able to validate once again, but when I re-booted the virus returned.
This is how I fixed it.
1. unplug network cable from computer.
2. Run ComboFix and DO NOT re-boot.
3. Run Malawarebytes Anti-Malware and delete bad files (this time it doesn't lock up)
4. Now re-boot
When I followed those steps, I was pleasantly surprised that Windows validated my copy of Vista before I even got back to the desktop.
All my functions work again.
Thanks Jon27 for helping me find ComboFix, as I needed both ComboFix and Malawarebytes Anti-malware to fix this bad virus.

I've been told though, that ComboFix is quite powerful and can wreck your computer if not used under supervision. I was told that after I used it but my machine seems ok, thankfully. Glad you sorted your problem.Wednesday, April 22, 2009 4:54 PM -
another solution..
I got the same problem,
I have windows vista enterprise genuine, suddenly one day while restarting it got deactivated..
when i tried to reactivate it again I got this error:
error code 0x80070565
It says "The maximum number of secrets that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded".
also when I try to activate windows using the phone all the installation ID spaces (text boxes) (1-9) are blank with no numbers.
I found alot of threads talking about the same problem.
I found out that the problem cozed by a virus/malware .
and any STRONG anti virs can fix it and then u have to reactivate the windows vista.
in my case the Combofix didn't work even it is the strongest. coz it stuck in "Combofix is preparing to run" for hours..
I used the " Dr.Web cureit " anti virus suggested in the thread in the below link:
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistainstall/thread/313cec2b-ca95-415d-9168-cc56900b0ade
u can download the free version (it will scan and fix only no live protection)
use the below link to download it:
http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/
do a scan and let it fix/delete all the infected files/processes. (for me express scan was enough.)
u need to restart, but before restart :
1. make sure before u restart that u have a strong antivirus running with live protection (this is optional just to avoid the return of this virus again)
2. disable the system restore (that should delete all restore points).
Restart ur PC then enter the key and activate ur windows again.
restart to test that windows still active and then reactivate system restor.
if the Dr.web or combofix did not solve ur problem try Malwarebytes (get it from download.com)
or any strong enough anti virus/malware. coz this type of viruses too difficult to be removed manually.
hope this will help anyone having this problem.
Kind Regards,
