Syncing virtual folders (.search-ms) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I think a ground-breaking feature would be the addition of virtual folders to the Mesh. For example: I want to share pictures that only have a specific person in it: Windows Search is able to list the search as a normal folder, but in fact it isn't. However, I should be able to select it as a real folder in order to sync its files.

It's a common scenario that everybody has been faced to: only a selection of files should be synced. The only way to do this at the moment is to copy the files of a search in a separate folder and syncing that folder. In this case, a copy (duplication of files) takes place, so it's not very interesting in terms of efficiency a convenience.

Are there plans to implement this feature?

  • Not in this product. Perhaps in Windows Live Mesh, part of Windows Live Essentials 2011, replacing both Live Mesh beta and Live Sync. Live Mesh - www.mesh.com - is on life support now.

If you want to suggest this, you can post it at http://feedback.live.com or in the forum for Windows Live Mesh at http://windowslivehelp.com

p.s. For the record, I think it is an outstanding idea. It may confuse some people, but that shouldn't stop it from being implemented. The danger, I think, might be that a virtual folder may include files that are already being sycnhronized with the Mesh in an actual folder. In effect, you'd have set up a double sync scenario where bad things could happen. I imagine that coding could be done to prevent/safeguard against it, but I don't know what technical limitations might exist.
