Can I make MEsh store it's temporary sync files on another partition then C: (system) ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • All my data folders are on D: and I don't want Mesh to fill my relatively small C: partition.

    thanks

  • There wouldn't be much point of storing the .wlx files elsewhere -- they are just place holders which will be filled by the actual syncing data. The only other temporary files would be the HoldingArea (files that are waiting for conflict resolution etc); you can redirect that using the information outlined below.

Try create a Junction using the Junction tool; (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768.aspx). It essentially, will allow you to create a 'fake folder' and redirect its contents elsewhere, even on another drive.

I can't quite remember the syntax for junction, but the two paths that are important is firstly the holding area, "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Live Mesh\GacBase\HoldingArea" and secondly the destination temporary directory, "D:\HoldingArea\" or wherever you want to temporarily store files.

  • I like your edit notes, Shadow XVII. :-)

I've marked Shadow's reply as the answer, but I'll note that I personally would not be doing this. The temp files for Live Mesh will be located in your Users branch of folders. You could move your Users folders from C: to D: (on XP, Documents and Settings), but I wouldn't even do that. Live Mesh will only fill up the Holding Area when you have conflicts and during a sync operation. If there are no conflicts, the temp files are then deleted. If you have that little space available on C:, I'd consider using a partition tool to enlarge it as you really need to have a reasonable amount of free space on the System drive with Windows updates and other temp files.
