Hello Ted,
The error code “Office Status: 112 License Store Error”, seen in your Diagnostic Report, tells me that there is an issue with the Licensing file that allows Office to Validate correctly (basically the file is malformed and unreadable). To resolve the issue, we just need to delete the file and it will regenerate once you re-Validate.
Please follow the step below and report on if this had resolved your issue or not.
(Please Note: To successfully complete the below steps, you must be an Administrator for the computer. If you are not the Administrator, please contact the person that is and request that they follow the below steps.)
Windows XP:
1) Click the “Start” button.
2) Click “Run…”
3) Type: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Office Genuine Advantage\data
4) Delete the file: data.dat
5) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click the Validate Office button.
After you have completed these steps and you are still experiencing issues with validation then please rerun the MGA diagnostic tool and post the results as a reply to this post and we will be able to further analyze the situation.
Thank you,
Matt Prall, MS

Matt, this seems to have fixed the validation issue however I am still unable install updates from Microsoft update.
FYI, after deleting the .dat file you suggested I validated successfully both my OS and Office. I returned to Microsoft update, ran a custom check, picked one update (smallest one for XP), attempted install, which failed. It got to the point after checking the system, showed bars as if to be downloading. This quickly ended and I received a message that the install was unsuccessful.
Below is the MGA test re ran.
