windows Vista registration RRS feed

  • Question

  • I activated my copy of Windows Vista when I purchased my computer just over a year ago.  I have been getting a message for a few weeks now asking me to activate it again, and message that this is not a genuine copy of windows.  When I try to activate I get an error message 0xC004F050  which tells me the product key is invalid.  I 'phoned microsoft only to be told they could do nothing about it because Hewlett Packard, from whom I purchased the computer, alter the windows software when they install it on their computers.   I contacted Hewlett Packard only to be told they cannot help me as my computer is just out of guarantee and they cannot proved free support.  How do I go about registering my supposedly genuine copy of windows?

    ANy help appreciated Sheila

  • Hi SheilaMatilda,

That should not happen.  slsvc is the Software Licensing Service and Vista uses that service to check it's own Genuine status.  The Service is not an optional part of Vista and is installed when Windows is installed. If the service is not running or (as the error suggests) is not installed on the computer at all, Vista can not run in a Genuine state, at all.

At this point the only suggestion I can make is to reinstall Vista.  (be sure to backup all importent files, off the computer, before reinstall. If you have trouble accessing your files, logging into safe mode should make it easier).

All manufacturers that sell PC with Windows pre-installed are required to include some way for the customer to reinstall Windows.  HP may have included the Recovery Software as a seperate CD or may have placed it in a hidden partition on the PC's hard drive. Refer to the documentation that came with the computer (or contact the manufacturer) for more details on the recovery process.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,

  • Hello Sheila,

Have you reinstall Vista at any time since you bought the computer?

      The reason I ask is

    a) 0xC004F050 usually indicates a Windows key used in the incorrect type of Windows.

    b) Your Diagnostic Report shows "Windows License Type: OEM System Builder"  However, Windows preinstalled on computers from large manufacturers (such as HP) use License Type: OEM SLP and COA SLP

OEM System Builder licenses are used by smaller 'Mom & Pop' type computer shops. Your HP Pavilion (Model FR449AA-ABU s3621uk) would not have come from the factory with OEM System Builder license software.

Also, all large manufacturers are required to have a sticker (on the side or bottom of the computer).  That is called the Certificate of Authenticity and it displays the Product Key for that computer and tell you what version of Windows the Product Key is for. Tell me what it says (do not post the Product Key).

What I am thinking is that when Vista was reinstalled, OEM System Builder software was used instead of the Recovery software that came with the PC and this could cause the 0xC004F050 error.

  • I have not reinstalled Vista.

The sticker on the computer says:

    then product key

  • I did initially register Vista and it has been working ok for almost a year. Now I have a black desktop screen. I registered it using the product key on the sticker on the computer

  • I have not reinstalled Vista.

The sticker on the computer says:

    Hi SheilaMatilda,

Does the Product Key on the sticker match the Product key listed in the above Diagnostic Report? (Windows Product Key: *****-*****-2V6RB-DM9DQ-Y2B3T)

Anyways, lets see if we can't resolve the issue.  Try the below steps and tell me if it fixes the issue.  If it does not, tell me what errors you get (if any) and also re-run the Diagnostic Report again and post it so I can see if anything has changed.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Re-Activate. If it asks for a Product Key, use the one listed on the sticker on the computer and Activate by using the Activate by Phone method.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

Sorry I couldn't be more help,
    Darin MS
