Importing A Second Checking Account To An Existing Money File RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our family has separate checking accounts and each account has its own Money (2004) file. Recently, we have been charging many transactions to a single credit card (Discover) to take advantage of an annual 2% rebate offer. Problem is, I have to write a check from one checking account several times a month and manually deposit it to the other checking account to cover for the first checking account's credit card charges since only one Money file has the Discover account.

For what it’s worth, these two checking accounts are *not* held at the same bank.

If both checking accounts were a part of the same Money file, I could enter any credit card payments as transfers from either checking account. No check writing would be necessary because I could send payments to Discover via each bank’s bill pay service (electronic payment).

Is combining these two checking accounts in one Money file asking for trouble? Seems like it could muddy the waters as far as reports go. I depend on Money for Payee & Category search information, and that information needs to be segregated. I am also concerned about file corruption.

  • You can merge two Money files but it is a bit of work.  See this post:

A single Money file can contain two distinct checking accounts with no problems.  If you need separate Payee and Category reports for for each checking account you can customize those reports by selecting the appropriate account.  You can also use Tools>Find and Replace>Advanced Search to look for transactions by category, payee, etc. for an individual account.

  • Yes, you can do a qif export from one file and then import it into the other.  This is easy if there is just one account to export/import.

As always, before doing anything like this, be sure that you have backup copies of each .mny file.  Then, if you don't like the result or if something goes awry, you can recover easily.  Once you are happy with the result you can delete the unneeded Money file.

  • Thanks, Bill.

Could I just import the data from the second Money file instead of combining the two?

  • I messed up the first try, but the second time worked very well from what I can tell.

On the first try, I forgot to import *all* associated accounts (4 total) at the *same time*.

The biggest adjustment was in Categories. Some listings overlapped, and it made it difficult to add a new bill, but I fixed the overlapping issue by combining any unassigned duplicate Categories to the default one.

It will take some getting used to seeing bills for two different checking accounts in the Bills & Deposits area, but it's better than what I had before.

    Thank you.

  • Why is it whenever someone imports Loose QIF data into another Money file, the transfers are all bunched up together? I've seen this phenomenon happen many times. I always sort transactions by Order Entry. Should I have changed that to Sort By Date before exporting the Loose QIF data, or does that even matter?
