This copy of windows is not genuine? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a new Acer Aspire about 18 months ago and it came pre installed with Windows 7 Home Premium. All was working fine until one day a couple of months ago i get this message coming up saying "This copy of Windows is not genuine."

I did re-format the computer a while back but it had been working properly after that 3-4 months before i had this problem come up.

I have downloaded and run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool and these are the results.

  • Thanks for the reply,

Machine has not been sent back to Acer or anyone for repairs.

Stickers on the bottom of the unit have worn from having it sit on my lap while using it, one of them is totally unreadable and the other one I can only just make out says "Proof of License Certificate of Authenticity" and has a product key on there.

I dont believe I have updated the BIOS as far as I'm aware. The only thing I can remember downloading from the Acer website was a driver update for the bluetooth.

    OK.
If you can read the Product Key, then try this......
    Click on Start
right-click on Computer, and select Properties
scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on the Change Product Key link.
follow the instructions and enter the Key from your COA Sticker.
If the machine accepts it, you will probably have to activate by phone.

Interesting - your PC appears to be new enough to have a Win7-compliant BIOS, but in fact has only a Vista-compliant one.
Have you sent the machine back to Acer for repair?
For what version and edition of Windows is the machine Licensed, according to the COA sticker on the case?
Have you updated the BIOS, perhaps sung the wrong version?

  • OK tried to enter the product key off the bottom of the machine and it said that it was an incorrect product key or somethin like that.

    Any other ideas?

EDIT: Just tried it  again swapping a letter that was either an X or Y and now it said it was successful, do i have to do anything else now?

I doubt that this will work - but try it anyhow.
Go to the Acer site, and download and install the latest BIOS update for your system (make sure that it's the one for Win7, if there's an option) - see if that cures the problem.

Other than that, then I can only really suggest contacting Acer direct and see if they can help. Since you say the machine came with Win7  on it, the COA Key should work (assuming you read it right - try again, this time using a torch and a magnifying glass), although it may just need Telephone activation if you can get the computer to accept the key in the first place.

Just in case, please post a new MGADiag report, and we'll check it again.

  • Just checked the Acer website and there is no BIOS downloads for this machine for Windows 7

I put the code in again but changed one of the letters and now it accepted it. So do I have to do anything else now?

    Cheers

Just make sure it's activated properly - and post another MGADiag report so we can check it.
