Can I sync to a subfolder?

Question
-
I have shared a folder from my laptop which contains files and subfolders. I now want to share one of those sub-folders with another pc. Can I do it? Any idea how?
My reason is that the main folder is quite large and I only want to share one 'project' across machines.Thursday, July 31, 2008 9:18 AM

Hi LJ,
Today, we have a requirement that you can’t nest Live Mesh Folders. So if your top level folder is a Live Folder, you can’t make any of its contents into a distinct Live Folder. We do know that there are some interesting scenarios where this kind of nesting is important (such as your example of only sharing one project across machines), and are looking into how we might be able to support this. As Steve indicates, please feel free to add this request to the Wish List.
Thanks,

Hi Duncan,
I may be misunderstanding your scenario (in particular, there is a difference between the devices in a mesh and the members of different folders), but assuming you're talking about sharing your mesh folders with other people (i.e., adding them as members to a folder): if A created folders 1-5, there's nothing stopping him or her from adding B as a member to 1-3 and C as a member to 3-5 - just so long as folders 1-5 are distinct Live Mesh folders. What you are currently unable to do is take a folder [6] with subfolders [6a and 6b] and share out just those subfolders. To try to make this a little clearer:
What works:
Folder 1 - Shared with A,B
Folder 2 - Shared with A,B
Folder 3 - Shared with A,B,C
folder 4 - Shared with A,C
Folder 5 - Shared with A,CWhat doesn't work:
Folder 6 - Shared with A
--SubFolder6a - Shared with A,B (Can't be shared separately)
--SubFolder6b - Shared with A,C (Can't be shared separately)You'd have to make 6a and 6b folders outside of 6 to share them with different people.
Again, I may be misunderstanding your described scenario (and please correct me if that is so), but as long as you're willing to make each folder a distinct Live Mesh folder, you can share them out with different sets of people.
Does that help?

To the best of my knowledge, no. You'd need to have the subfolder designated as a Mesh folder at the top level in order to then share that branch with another device. Since the top level folder is the Mesh folder, all files and folders within are going to sync to the Mesh and all subscribed devices. The subfolder selection is a request that has been made in the Sticky: Live Mesh Wish List thread, so add you voice to it by posting there.

Ben,
I think you've just answered this, but am I right in believing that if we had [say] three devices in a mesh [each representing a different person] then you can't have a situation where A sees [say] 5 folders [1-5], B sees folders 1-3, C sees folders 3-5 ?

Thanks Ben, I figured that was the case and can see how it my be difficult, but I think it would be a very useful feature in some circumstances. Another scenario would be dividing photos into 'album' folders and choosing to only share certain folders with friends.
Not quite sure how your reply got marked as the answer when I didn't do it, but I would've anyway ...

Yup, that's it.
The only outstanding question is; Can A remove B and C's access to the folders they currently have? I assume that it's his mesh, he can.
I guess I'll have to wait until theSDK comes out to see if I can wrap an application around these capabilities [auto remove access at the end of a project timeline for instance....].
Thanks.
