Automated Server Backups? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I like the new feature that allows for a backup of the WHS files - however is there anyway to automate this backup process?

It appears to be a manual process - which doesn't make a great deal of sense given the other robust backup features.

  • Hi,
you are right, that the Server backup of Shared folders is a manual process.
There may be reasons for this, like that your backup medium will not always be connected to the server (or at least should not be).
If you want automation you would have to create a script based solution, i.e. invoking robocopy.
But this would not do such an space saving backup as it is done by the integrated Backup feature.

Has anyone figured out a solution / work-around for this? I finally got around to purchasing an external drive to use for Server backups, but I too was surprised to find you can only perform this task manually. Is there an add-in to make automate backups of the server?

    Thanks!

You can automate the steps described in the Technical Brief (pages 24 - 25) using Taskmanager and Robocopy. Please note you should schedule this taks well away from the Backup window and Backup cleanup time (sundays around midnight)

  • That's interesting.  I don't see why they wouldn't have enabled automation of this feature.

Sure, a drive may not be always connected - but then the backup would fail and would wait for the next instance when the drive was connected.  Much like it waits for a computer to be connected.

So bottom line in this version of WHS there is no way to do an automated periodic backup without using an additional script or backup tool?

  • Hi,

There is no way at present that this can be accomplished automatically, however it could be worthwhile asking Alex, the writer who wrote the current Backup Add-In, whether it would be possible for an automated option.

  • Thanks Colin! Without committing to anything, this is a topic that is actually on my mind right now. Hopefully I'll be able to provide some possibilities in the not-too-distant future....

  • I just connected an external drive and performed my first manual backup-but could only backup files in the user and shared areas.  Is there a way to back-up the 'back-ups' of the network attached computers?  That way i can take the external drive off site and have my entire network safe and secure in the event of a site disaster...

There is a manual process documented in the Backups whitepaper, which I automated here:
