Win7 Pro x64 not genuine a month after replacing hard drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

About a month ago I replaced a failing hard drive on one of our workstations and reinstalled windows using the original product key and an OEM Windows 7 Pro disk. All was well until this morning, when Windows decided the key it had been using for a month was not valid. Frankly, this is a common occurrence. I have always resolved this issue by simply going through the manual activation process using the automated phone system. However, this particular computer will not give me that option. Instead it gives me this error: 0x004F063 - The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer BIOS is missing a required licence. Why would this change, and how can I fix it? I have tried slui.exe 4 which results in the same error. I ran MGADiag.exe which reported the following:

  • The problem here is that you appear to have reinstalled using Retail media with the OEM_SLP Key - which relies on the use of the Manufacturer's Recovery media for the install.

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment),  using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.

  • It just occurred to me that we installed a new firewall yesterday. Not sure if that would have any impact on the Windows validation process, but I thought I would share just in case. Thanks!

  • I'm literally having the exact same problem. Just like you, replaced my old HDD with a new SSD and swapped out my network card too. Installed Win7 x64.

The only difference is I had an OEM copy of Win7 Home Premium from acer installed before, I got hold of Win7HP ISO online and installed that (because I didn't want all the acer bloatware). Validated fine, a month later it's all gone tits up.

I'm going to keep looking for a solution, and I'll post back if I find one. Otherwise I'll have to phone them tomorrow.

  • I have the same issue, replaced my hard drive in my dell laptop and now the product code will not validate. when I call the automated number to activate it, it tells me that the code is locked.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool

(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

     Once saved, run the tool.

Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.

To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.x

      - in your own thread, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

  • Hey man, I've managed to fix this.

What Noel said is correct, we have licences for OEM win7, so your key shouldn't work for retail win7.

    Follow this guide: https://techdoors.wordpress.com/2012/09/26/activating-windows-7-oem-way/

You basically install a key to activate windows based on your manufacturer. Seems to be working fine for me now :)
