Connect Application: "This operation cannot be completed at this time.".... but with PP2 instead of PP1

Question
-
After spending the better part of a week's calendar time rebuilding my WHS box (WHS was telling me that C: was on the way out), I find that I cannot install the WHS connector software on any of my other PCs. The install is throwing the infamous "This operation cannot be completed at this time. Please try again later...." dialog.
The only thread I've found where somebody claims to have worked around this problem - and others concurred - referred to PP1. The poster removed PP1, re-installed it, made a registry change, and was back in business.
But when I started looking into doing that on my WHS box, it had PP2 installed as of 10/6 - and PP2 is annoted as "This update cannot be removed."
I found another thread in which somebody says they removed PP2 using a named Uninstall routine, but the thread seems inconclusive to me and I'm afraid to try going there.
This problem seems to come up a *lot*. It's long on complaints; short on solutions.
But PP2 seems tb a new twist.
Has anybody heard anything relevant to workarounds under PP2?

Hi,
did you remove or relocate the folder Home Server Connector Software from the software share on your server?
May also be you have some name resolution issues.
Check this thread, how other people worked around this.

Hi,

Thanks!
In my diligence in restoring the shares (before the rebuild I had built a second server and manually mirrored all the shares to it - and then copied them back post-install) somehow the rebuild wound up at a different level than the orginal build - automatic updates on both notwithstanding - and I managed to downlevel the installer folder when I copied the "Software" share back into the new build.
Reverted to the version of the installer created by the new build and it worked OK.
Has anybody filed a bug report on that inane dialog that the installer throws? I don't guess that MS would look kindly on such a report, but that dialog is *bad*....
Seems to me like the code behind it has to know at least *something* more than they tell the user and revealing same might save a lot of man hours across the world bc, in spite of the assertion in the cited thread that it can't be happening to a lot of people or this board would flooded, two days of Googling has convinced me that it really does happen to a lot of people.
Ok, Pete, define "a lot".... but still....Sunday, October 18, 2009 12:32 AM
