Locating and restoring individual files from OneCare Backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good afternoon,

I recently damaged a photo file while working on it in Paint. I had made too many changes to use the "undo" function. I didn't think I had a problem since I had a backup file somewhere in OneCare.

I was able to get to the place where I had the option to restore individual files but when I put the name of the file in the search box it came back unable to locate it.

I tried every thing I could think of to locate the file to restore it but all failed. I could locate some photo files by their identification number but not the one I was looking for.

My question is: Am I missinformed about the ability to locate and restore an individual file?

Since I can locate some files but not the one I am seeking, have I somehow corrupted the addresses of the individual files?

Is there something I should be doing to allow me to do this in the future?

I have all of our documents on an external hard drive and the only way we can access them is thru shortcuts on the desktop. Is this some how causing the problem?

As you can tell, I am totally confused and have exhausted my limited computer knowledge.

Thank you for any advice and assistance that you may be able to privide.

    Sincerely
    Richard

P.S. I did restore the image from a CD's that I had burned of "My Documents" as backup before we migrated to One Care.

I also have made a note to always create a copy to work on in Paint and never modify originals.

  • Sorry to take so long to reply. If the original file was backed up, meaning that it is one of the file types you've selected to backup in your plan settings, then it should exist in the backups. Finding files in the restore list is rather painful, though. I don't believe you've done anything to corrupt the file name of the backed up file, but perhaps the search feature isn't working. If you know the location of the original file, you should be able to browse the restore list to locate it.

My recommendation is to contact support if you need further help with this.
