Confirmed, this is a Retail Windows 7 Ultimate key that is NOT blocked (i.e. it is Valid and Genuine).

However, I am unsure if this is an Upgrade or a Full key (my tool sometimes leaves that piece of information out for some reason).

This key has also been activated 29 times (between 5/3/2010 and 5/21/2010) on three different hardware configurations. However, the progression of the different hardware IDs suggest that it was the same computer that just had hardware added and/or replaced (or possible activated on one computer, moved to a 2nd and then moved to a third) either way, this is completly allowed for a Retail license (as long at it was only installed on one computer at a time). The strange part is that from your original post, it suggests that at least some of the 29 "Activations" were, in fact, Activation Attempts but my tool shows them all as Successful.

Note that a few of the activations occured after this thread was created which may suggests that the issue may be resolved, is that correct?

If not, with 29 activations, it is likely that Windows would now require it to be Activated by Phone.  If you are still having problems, would you Activate by Phone and when you reach the number, either select the option to talk to a Live Activation Rep or, if there is no option, don't enter or say anything to the phone prompt.  That will force the prompt to transfer you to a Live Rep. At that point the Rep should be able to Activate your Windows or help you with the problem.

    Hope that helps,

  • "local wholeseller we use regularly"
I would suggest that you review your usage policy every now and then.
I can't *swear* to it, but I have grave suspicions that your license is a
MSDN one, not available to the public.
Wait until Darin replies - he should have the chapter-and-verse on it.

That machine hasn't yet been activated?? you may be stuck in the timewarp of
    activation technology.

    Try installing the WAT update

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=150841
    for 32-bit
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=152411
    for 64-bit

and the create another report and post back

  • What usage policy are you referring to?

I was curious if perhaps our wholesaler had unintentionally sold us a bad copy (since that seems to be a common problem), but figured this was the place to find that out..

This machine has not yet been activated. I just installed the WAT update and it still will not activate.

Seems to be a LOT of illegal copies being sold by legal/reputable resellers, no?

    Thanks,

    Ben

  • try to put the key you have back in because you are on the default key

    1. Type cmd in Start menu.
    2. Right-click on the first result (cmd.exe) and click on Run as administrator (confirm by
    clicking Yes if required).
    3. Type slmgr -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Replace the XXXXX by a valid
product key and do a phone activation
slui 4  will bring up the  phone activation and go from there type it in search for program and files box

Ah - thanks for confirming it's a 'legal' one - my database of numbers put

  • It accepted the product key using the command line, but when I attempt to activate by phone it tells me that I do not meet all the requirements and I should contact my vendor to buy another license or a different product..

    Geez this is a pain..

  • Darin may be able to check the key, I suspect it may be an upgrade key since it was accepted but won't activate. If it is an update key you may need to reinstall by invoking the installation from within windows. You can't install an upgrade booting from the media and succesfully activate the upgrade key, in fact it won't accept the key and you would have to do a keyless install (I believe).

I am sure this is the problem but Darin may be able to tell for sure, if this is the case you will need to possess a prior, qualifying OS to legaly install and use the OS.

  • Wow it has been activated 29 times?!?! Issue is not resolved.

It is a full version, not an upgrade..

This was used on 2 laptops before and since been removed now its installed on my desktop, but that should only account for 2 activations. I have not successfully activated on this machine so that tells me either the key has been compromised or there is something wrong with the activation process that is making it look like it was successful on the MS side and failed on the local side.

I attempted to activate by phone after using the slmgr -ipk XXXXX method and it didn't allow me to activate.

I will call the number and try and get a rep..

Here's my current MGADiag ouput for reference:
