Windows 7 Not Genuine (Build 7601) RRS feed

  • Question

  • After about a year and a half of having this computer my computer is now saying that my copy is not Genuine. This copy was provided on the computer when we bought it. Here is the MGADiag tool report. I started to receive this error with a 0x8004FE21 but I used a restore point. This all started to happen after I installed Visual Studio 2012 RC.

  • That's looking a lot better :)

Now all that remains is for you to activate it.

If it was activated before, then you may need to rebuild the Licensing Store (and it won't hurt to do it anyhow)

Please first tryrecreating the Licensing Store.

    Recreate theLicensing Store

    1) Click Startbutton.

    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field

    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator

    4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.

    5) Type:

    cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    8) Type: net start sppsvc

    9) Type: slui.exe

    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case.

If internet activation fails, use telephone activation, and speak to an operator.

    telephone activation (operator calls)

     Click on the Start button

    in the Search box, type

    SLUI 4

     and hit the Enter key

follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

  • Input Error: There is no script engine for file extension ".vbs".

Unusual error that - have you been using any form of Registry Cleaner? What Anti-virus are you using?

Interesting that you say that you've just installed the VS RC - I've installed it with no problems, so I doubt that's the cause, although it may have been a trigger.

We need to check the registry for missing  vbs references.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window and run the following commands.

    REG QUERY HKCR\.vbs /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\Software\Classes\.vbs  /S REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\VBSFile /S REG QUERY "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment" REG QUERY HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.vbs REG QUERY "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0_Config\Languages\File Extensions\.vbs"

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • No. But I did have Notepad++ associated with the .vbs file ext. I have since uninstalled that version of Notepad++ (Pre-6.0). I updated to the newest Unicode version.

I'll run those elevated commands right now.

  • Ah - not a good thing to do!

Have you managed to correct that now?

(the output from those commands will tell us whether it worked, if so)

I missed that it had concatenated the two most important entries -

    REG QUERY HKCR\.vbs /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\Software\Classes\.vbs  /S

please run those two again, and post the results

  • You've got two choices - the safe way, or the fun way :)

The safe way to correct it is to right-click on a vbs file, and select 'Open with..' - point the system at the Microsoft Windows Basesed Script Host (if you can see it - if not, browse to C:\Windows\System32\WScript.exe and select that - make sure that the 'Always use....' box is ticked and click OK.

If you want the fun way, I'll have to check through the output in detail and make sure I get everything :)

  • Hmmm. Just restarted after attempting to associate .vbs files to "wscript.exe". I'm still being told that:

There is no script engine for file extension ".vbs".

    Friday, August 10, 2012 12:25 PM
  • I ran:

    cscript.exe //H:WScript

    And:

    regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\vbscript.dll

  • .VBS scripts are now associated with WScript. exe. I ran the last 2 Command Prompt Commands you posted and have gotten this:

  • That's looking a lot better :)

Now all that remains is for you to activate it.

If it was activated before, then you may need to rebuild the Licensing Store (and it won't hurt to do it anyhow)

Please first tryrecreating the Licensing Store.

    Recreate theLicensing Store

    1) Click Startbutton.

    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field

    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator

    4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.

    5) Type:

    cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    8) Type: net start sppsvc

    9) Type: slui.exe

    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case.

If internet activation fails, use telephone activation, and speak to an operator.

    telephone activation (operator calls)

     Click on the Start button

    in the Search box, type

    SLUI 4

     and hit the Enter key

follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report
