Vista telling me my copy is not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Lenovo factory installed with Vista Business.  After updating some drivers last week, for some reason my Software key was no longer valid.  After calling Lenovo, then being referred to Microsoft, I was able to authenticate over the phone.  However, I still get messages that my copy of Vista may not be genuine and attempts at Genuine Vista Validation is unsuccessful.  I can't access the control panel at all at this point.  I ran the diagnostic I found in other threads and got the output below.  Has anyone run into this before?

  • Hi vnguyen187,

The code 0x80070426, tells me that your Software Licensing Service has stopped. To restart the service:

If you have acces to the Start button:

    1) Click the Start button

    2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

If you do not have access to the Start button:

    1) Click the option Access computer with reduced functionality

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

If this does not resolve your issue, please create a (no cost) Support Request at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029 to get the Service started again.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm able to try to first method, however I haven't been sucessful with the provided command.  I get the following error:

slmgr.vbs<291, 5> Microsoft VBSript runtime error:  Permission denied

I make sure to right click and run as Administrator.  The command window beings with Administrator:  Command Prompt.  I've tried rebooting in safe mode in case another process was blocking it, but got the same result.

  • Hey Carey I had the same problem, and the command prompt stopped the validation popups. However, the control panel issues are still there. (I tried installing hotfix 929637 but it said it did not apply to this system) The control panel will flash when I click on it but then disappear. How can I fix this?

  • Thanks Darin.  This was the solution suggested by Microsoft when the warning message would appear.  I've tried this several times without success prior to posting on this board and againg upon your suggestion without success.  I will submit a support request.  Thanks again.

  • I have a Lenovo 3000 N100, purchased with a LEGAL version of Vista Premium on it.  I recently installed the MS updates that started these "geniune" pop-ups.  I went to the website to verify and it said my computer failed validation.  I tried to check to see if that service was running, but I then found out that the control panel window no longer opens.  It paints the window and then disappears.

Why is Microsoft purposefully trying to annoy their legal users?  If I had a pirated version of Vista I wouldn't have to put up with this ***.

Am I supposed to spend hours on the phone with technical reps now to resolve this issue?  I think I may just look around for a different OS.
