Cannot Activate Windows Vista after rebooting OS from recovery disc. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi. As mentionned above, I'm currently having problems activating Windows Vista. I had an Acer desktop, with Vista pre-installed on the harddrive. This was activated a couple of years ago with no problems, when the computer was new. However it crashed unexpectedly about six weeks ago and we were unable to power up or even reboot the OS with the recovery discs. Instead, we bought a new tower, with an ASRock G31M-VS2 motherboard, and installed the old harddrive in this, managing to get it all up and running fine.

Then it suddenly came up with the 'Activate Windows Now' window, and when I enter the product key, comes up with error code 0xC004E003.

I have attempted several solutions, going back to the earliest System Restore point possible and trying to activate then. I have also phoned Acer, but was unable to get anything helpful out of them.

Also, I cannot seem to access the option to 'Activate by Phone', only to buy a new product key, re-enter my product key, or to contact Acer.

I could re-install the OS from the recovery discs once more, but because of the work involved and the chance of the same thing occuring once more, I am slightly loath to do that without trying everything else first.

It doesn't seem like my problem is unique, but I was struggling to understand the similar threads, and thought it best to post a question of my own. If you need more info, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your time and help. Kim

  • Unfortunately, when your Acer desktop computer died, so did the Acer OEM Windows Vista license.  It cannot be used or activated on a computer that does not have a specific Acer motherboard BIOS.  Therefore, you will need to purchase a new Windows "Full Version" license.  Since Windows Vista is not sold anymore, consider purchasing and installing  Windows 7 Professional – Full Version.
