Selecting Backup File Types RRS feed

  • Question

  • There is no sense to the backup file types in OneCare Backup Settings.

The size of the backup was huge and I questioned the necessity of such a large backup.

I went into Backup settings to select file types and started shutting off things that I didn't consider essential. I happened to look at the details of several of these groups.

For example "Windows Email" was selected: I don't use Outlook or Express. In the details I noted many files that had nothing to do with E-mail.

In other sections it was similar. Under Saved Video there were many non-video files.

Is there any way to simply specify paths, directories and possibly file types to backup?

OneCare Backup seems to be an "all or nothing" approach and that isn't appropriate in my situation.

You can exclude locations from backup.

You can't specify locations to include as the entire local drive is scanned for files to backup based on type, with the exceptions of locations and files excluded by default (\Windows and \Program Files, plus all program files such as EXE and DLL).

The file types are detailed in OneCare Help and this KB article:
