2TB drive size loss RRS feed

    Just started building a new home server using a 2 year old Dell T100 server (Dual core E3110 3Ghz  Xeon) and WHS v1 PP3.  The software loaded with no problem and all the latest updates. I added a WD 20EARS 2TB drive to the WD2500AAKS 250GB system drive. In WHS console the new drive showed 1.8TB free but when I added  my data I quickly ran out of space (only about 200GB added).  When I checked the disk in Explorer it shows a total size of 212GB with 1.7TB free!  I have checked that I have the latest BIOS and the drive is brand new. Tried to remove and reset but the same result. Any suggestions?

    Tim,

    Most drive manufactures use 2 billion bytes as a TB whereas most operating systems use 1024^4 as a TB.  That’s why you see the discrepancy in space.
