Using an Ordnance Survey grid reference. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I looked at AutoRoute to find out how to input an Ordnance Survey grid reference and it gave the following example

"SU 47972 29518".  The problem is that the Camping & Caravanning Club uses a different format such as "185-476 277".  Any advice would be welcome.

  • AutoRoute's is correct.

The SU refers to a 100km square.

The remaining numbers are X,Y coordinates to arbitrary accuracy - yours are to the metre.

To be honest, the Camping&Caravanning one doesn't make sense. Often in computer usage the 100km square is referenced using simple cartesian coordinates - ie. high order digits as prefixes to the existing coords. Then you just end up with two (longer) numbers of equal length.
