Windows Vista Basic invalid key RRS feed

  • Question

  • My problem is two-fold.

We bought a new Compaq in Singapore last year with Vista pre-installed.

In June we moved to Thailand.

Last month we stayed at a hotel in Bangkok and the a/c driped on the laptop, which had us have it repalced by the hotel - we kept the hard drive, however.

Now we cannot even boot, we receive the message that the product key is invalid for activation.

    Microsoft tech support Thailans enjoys an 08.30 - 17.30 working time - - - nothing on week-ends.

Pleease assist as we need the laptop for our business.

  • Hello Sing_Sing,

You (most likely) will not be able to boot the new laptop from the old Hard Drive. To access the information on the old hard drive, I suggest that you boot the new laptop using the pre-installed windows that came on the hard drive that came with the new laptop. You should be able to put the old hard drive in an external enclosure (available at most computer shops) and connect the external enclosure to the new laptop (probably thru USB) and be able to access the information on the old hard drive.

    I hope that has helped.
