Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object..

  I've been having some computer problems lately, I'm starting to think it all has something to do with Windows Installer but I'm not sure, so I was going to use this program (Microsoft Fix It Centre), but as with all other Microsoft products, I get an error as soon as I attempt to install it. And the error is:

   "Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.."

  I've also been having trouble when attempting to install ANYTHING from windows/microsoft update center (auto or manual)...

  How can I get around this error? What does it mean?
