Office Product Key RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently purchased Office Home and Student 2007 which included 3 home pc licenses. I was able to install it successfully on my desktop and laptop, but get an invalid product key error when installing on my netbook. Can someone help with this? My my laptop and desktop are running Vista while my netbook is XP, if that matters.

Your netbook came with a preinstalled Trial of the 2007 Office System.  This is a special installation that, depending upon which product key is entered, will activate one of several different Office editions.

Here's the catch:  even though you have a Product Key for Office H&S 2007, the product key you have is a retail license product key.  The special installation of Office Trial on your netbook is for OEM licenses and will only accept OEM Product keys which come in what are called Medialess Licensing Kits.  That is why you are receiving the product key not valid error, because you are trying to activate an OEM license for Office with a retail license product key.

    Here's what to do:
    1.  From the Add or Remove Programs applet of Control Panel, locate and uninstall the program "2007  Microsoft Office System" from your netbook.

    2.  Restart twice.

    3.  Download the retail trial of Office H&S 2007 onto your netbook from this link:  http://us20.trymicrosoftoffice.com/product.aspx?sku=3082920

    4.  Install Office from the download above.  When it asks for the product key, just type in your full retail Office H&S 2007 product key instead of the Trial product key.

    5.  After installation, activate normally online.  Restart.  Then go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button to validate Office normally.

  • Hello majech,

In order to receive the best support, we request all users initially download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click the "Continue" button, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into your post.

Just to clarify, are you getting the error message while attempting to enter the product key into the Activation Wizard?
