Using a MAK or KMS with Windows Anytime Upgrade

Question
-
Greetings,
I'm trying to upgrade a version of Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional. I'm running into a wall as it seems like i have to use Windows Anytime Upgrade to perform this task. I have a MAK code available to do this from the Microsoft Volume Licensing website. When I try to perform the upgrade I get an error saying that I cannot use that code with Windows Anytime Upgrade.
It's a Sony Vaio laptop that I would really like to put on our domain.

Correct. You cannot use a vlk with AU.
To use Anytime Upgrade you must purchase and use the product key provided with the AU purchase. An AU key is very specific to the kind of upgrade you have chosen.

I don't see how a volume license key would make any difference at all. Use another upgrade method if you want to use a vlk.

If I boot into a Windows 7 disk it says that I should start up Windows and run the disk from there. If I run the disk from Windows I get a message that I should use Windows Anytime Upgrade. All roads appear to lead to using Anytime Upgrade.
We've got a few PCs here running Windows 7 from that key and been working fine for, well... since Windows 7 was released. Is there not an exchange program to swap a MAK code for one that would work with AU? That would be really useful!

No such program. Where did you buy your Anytime Upgrade? If you didn't buy it how did you get it?

I've not bought an Anytime Upgrade. I'm just trying to use the Product Keys that I've already purchased. If it isn't going to work then I'll just have to reinstall it.
Cheers anyway.

To use a VLK to upgrade any system, you have to use a full upgrade procedure, complete with disks, starting the upgrade from within Windows - you cannot use the Anytime Upgrade. I have no idea why your Sony is apparently insisting on an Anytime Upgrade.I would suggest that you post this query to a more appropriate forum - such as either the Answers Win 7 Install forum http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7install/threadsor the TechNet ITPro equivalent, here

I'm having the same issue. This has nothing to do with Sony or anyone other than Microsoft. I have an Upgrade VLK but if I try to upgrade from 7 Home to 7 Pro it prompts me telling me I have to use the Anytime Upgrade. It seems the upgrade is intended strickly for upgrading previous versions to Windows 7 and not for upgrades within the version. I'm going to try calling MS tomorrow and see if they'll give me Anytime Upgrades in trade.Wednesday, February 1, 2012 6:05 AM
