I followed the directions, downloaded the Windows Activation and ran it, and it's somewhere in the ether of my computer. The troubleshooting suggestions on the download page say to uninstall the update, but it doesn't show in my downloaded programs. I downloaded it again (in case that helped) but when it finishes installing it says it's already installed. It has never done anything and I can't find it even using search to uninstall it.Also, can't do backups or open a cmd window.
So... now what?
Debbie

I use McAfee security and it never found a virus. And I've never used a registry cleaner.
Hmmm – have you recently upgraded the McAfee?Have you EVER had Norton installed on this machine – even an unactivated Trial? Both can cause severe problems in unexpected ways – you may want to think about uninstalling the current one, then running the removal tools for both, and then reinstalling McAfee (not my choice, but it’s your machine).Other than that I can only suggest a repair install, a reformat/reinstall or contacting WGA Support.WGA Support can be found here-North America:

Outside North America:

Please let us know if (and how) MS manage to repair the problem - it would be useful for future reference!

Your problem is not primarily to do with the WAT update – but the file mismatch highlighted above. The best thing to start with is probably a basic chkdsdsk and sfc.....running CHKDSK and SFCtype in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC
SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on the Start button
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

As I stated above, I cannot open a command window.
"C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe is not a valid Win32 application."
I can't do backups either, another error message.
Is there another way to get a cmd window?

Ah – sorry.I suspect that one of your services has been disabled – probably the Application Information Service.Boot to Safe Mode, Open Services.msc and check the AI service’s settings – it should be set to Manual, and the Logon should be the Local System account. Also check the Cryptographic Services are set to Automatic, using the Network Service account. Then boot back to normal mode, and see if CMD starts working :)If not, you should be able to run the CHKDSK from a Safe Mode Admin CP (not sure about SFC)

okay, did the safe mode and checked the settings and they were already as you posted. Still get the same error message on the CMD.EXE.
Ran CHKDSK from safe mode and it gave me about 12 lines of data and then after 1195 allocation units on disk it says Unable to obtain a handle to the event log.

I suspect that you are going to have to do a system recovery – it sounds as if you have some serious problems with services or permissions.Have you had a problem with a virus recently? Have you been using any kind of Registry Cleaner?
