Help! Live Mesh will not stop transferring RRS feed

  • Question

  • Last week Live Mesh would not sync files between my desktop computer and laptop. I used the update now feature to try and force the issue, this seemed to solve the problem - but now live mesh will not stop constantly transferring data across my home network. The traffic is so much that nobody else can use the internet unless I stop Live Mesh.

Live mesh will not always indicate in the toolbar that it is transferring data , but is constantly attemtping to sync with the live desktop. At the moment it is approximately 90Mb of files that I have included in Live Mesh but since Monday evening over 1.5Gb of data has been sent during an evening period when I have left both computers running overnight.

I realise that Live Mesh is a beta service but I haven't had problems with it so far, but surely transferring 1.5Gb of data from 90Mb, not all of the files on the Live Desktop still not synced and this huge traffic on the network isn't correct? The service is making my computers unusable and I am getting to the stage that I'm going to have to consider uninstalling Live Mesh, which is a shame as I have grown to depend on it.

    Please help!

  • No, that's certainly not normal.
What kind of files are in the folder you are synchronizing?
Any chance that this thread applies - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/8f0a3611-fa64-43ae-bac0-e87685366fc8? I just made that thread a sticky again after the issue was raised by th59 as still happening.

Please capture logs and submit a bug report:

Note that you may not receive a response to the bug report, though. It will be transferred to the internal system to be assigned to the appropriate development group.

What I suggest, after filing the bug report, is uninstalling Live Mesh from the PCs and remove both devices from the Mesh at www.mesh.com
Then, remove the folder(s) from the Live Desktop and start over.

  • No there are no .eml on .nws files in the folders on my Live Mesh.

My current setup is all the original files are on my desktop machine running Windows 7 Professional 64, with three Live Mesh folders:
Work Documents 29.2MB, MT265 25.7MB and MT264 30.1MB which are synced with my laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 32.

Yesterday evening I removed both installs of Live Mesh, removed the folders from the Live Mesh Desktop, remove the devices and removed the sync folders from each machine. I copied normal folders back to both machines, so that they contained the exact files at the same state. Reinstalled Live Mesh and configured it on the desktop machine, checking also for further updates. I added the folders to the Live Mesh and configured each to not sync with the Live Desktop.

Then I configured the folders on the Laptop merging them into the previously copied folders. Both machines are on the same network and after approximately two hours, they finally stopped syncing and I could use the internet connecting for anything but Live Mesh. I felt confident that I had sorted the problem so I synced the Work Documents folder with the Live Desktop. This still has not finished syncing (some files show the green icon on the Live Desktop) from 1:00am to 7:00am and occasionally will stop (making me believe that it's finally finished) before starting again and using all the bandwidth on my internet connection.

I have to exit the Live Mesh service and reset the network adaptor so that I can use the internet (otherwise sites time out, pages are not rendered correctly or the browser sits there doing nothing) as it takes up to 10 minutes for the activity to die down. This is really frustrating and I'm getting to the point where I need to use these files (and I'm afraid to touch them in case I start the system syncing crazily) and all this bandwidth use is making me unpopular with others in the house and probably with my ISP to!

  • Once again - not normal, so I don't know what's happening on your system.
I don't think it is affecting your Internet connection since you disabled the Sync to Live Desktop and configured it for P2P, but it is probably making your router go nuts, hence the reason that others on the local LAN are being impacted.
As I noted before, while Live Mesh will do lots of churning to get the folders in sync - even if they are actually already in sync - it typically throttles its own activity to minimize impact on the network.
Can you tell me the make/model of your router and what security software may be in place on the PCs that you are using in your Mesh?
Have you submitted the bug report with logs yet? If so, can you provide a link here?
