Does Home Server need to be on local network RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi hoping you folks might know.  Is there I can set up the WHS clients to work across a Wan where computers can map drives via IP but cannot see each other through network neighborhood and the like.  In otherwords is there someway I can set up the server or clients to work with a computer on a specific IP port (rather than autoscanning for the server when client installed and computer is  hooked up to a local network)?

  • Hello,
you could set up a VPN and try to specify the IP address in the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\Transport\Server\Name=[The IP Address of the WHS]

But it would be a good idea, to do the installation and the initial backup through a local network connection due to the amount of data to be transfered.
And you should be aware, that this scenario is not supported at all.
