  • UK citizen travelling to the Far East to work.  Purchase an Acer Aspire 5573 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed (OEM) in July 2007 in Singapore; as the OS was pre-installed no installation CD-ROM/DVD was provided at the time of purchase.  I am certain that I registered my laptop and software in accordance with the on-screen instructions.  Since that time there was no problem at all.

Last week I begane receiving repeated windows instructing me to enter the Windows Vista product key, so I entered the number displayed on the certifcate sticker located on the base of the laptop.  After several attempts the same error message told me that the product key was invalid.  Despite my patient attempts I still could not register the item:

    Cxxx9-TxxxD-6MW7J-JXB3F-46QM2

On 4 Nov 07 I turned on my laptop to find that a window appeared warning me that my software may be corrupted or counterfeit.  I was shocked, and attempted to repeat the regstration process.  As a result Windows has now shut down and will only operate in a restricted capacity (i.e. only Internet Explorer can be used).  Apart from the IE window my desktop screen is completely blank; I cannot even locate the 'Start' icon in order to access other computer files, which I require for work purposes.

I visited the Windows website and searched diligently in the 'Vista FAQ' section, but I must say that the information that I required was not very forthcoming.  I was willing to purchase a product key online (at additional cost to me) but I found that downloads are not available outside of the US (I am now located in the British Indian Ocean Territories, very islated from the UK and US).

It seems that downloading any new software is not possible as Windows now shuts down and logs off periodically unless I enter the correct product key!  Out of frustration I face the prospect of purchasing another copy of Vista from another vendor, at great expense.

Therefore please can someone advise me what to do next, or how I can receive a new product key via email?  Failing that, I may be forced to do something drastic, and completely re-format my hard drive and install an alternative operating system, at the expense of my valuable personal files within.

    Yours, in frustration!
