Serious file displacement error RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been using Live Mesh for quite a while now (started using at Tech Preview time).
I have included my Mozilla Thunderbird mail data directory into the Live Mesh so that I could have all mail backed-up remotely.

Backing up Thunderbird mail has been fine with Tech Preview version but it's been a nightmare for me since the new Beta version has been released -
Thunderbird stores each folder as a separate file. The folder file where the email ends up gets updated every time I receive email. Immediately I get a conflit ("Resolve Conflicts" window pops up) asking whether I want to go back to the old file or keep the new file. If I ignore the pop-up box (which by the way doesn't pop-up automatically, I've had to discover it), I end up with the new emails disappearing from Thunderbird (Live Mesh seem to keep the old file by default).

I am very frustrated with the bug since some mail eventually got lost because of constant file replacements and was forced to exclude my Thunderbird mail data folder from Live Mesh.

I also wish there was a setting in Live Mesh to set the time interval at which Live Mesh would sync the folders. Keeping Thunderbird in Live Mesh causes too much traffic. I would prefer to sync mail data no more than once per 3 hours to save resources and channel bandwidth.

  • Hi Eugene,

I'm sorry for the frustration, and very concerned about the loss of data.  We know that we have a lot of improvements still to make to the conflict detection and resolution features, but Live Mesh should not be performing any "default" conflict resolution, so that certainly sounds like a bug.  If you wouldn't mind, please go ahead and send your logs to lmprev@microsoft.com and we'll work with you right away to figure out what's going on.  Please note, though, that since we are a beta we highly recommend backing up all data that you're syncing with Live Mesh.

Your request for control over when Live Mesh syncs data is a popular one.  Please feel free to cast your vote for this feature, and any others you would like to see, in our Suggestions sticky.

    Thank you,

    Ben.

  • Thanks for your reply Ben!

I will do my best to help to resolve the bug.
I understand this is beta and take the responsibility on any losses of my data.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Ben

Just a quick one... I've just set up Live Mesh to do the same as Eugene did in his November '08 posting. I've taken all my folders within my Thunderbird profle folder and mesh enabled them to create a backup. But having read this thread, can you shed any light on whether this remains a problem?

    Thanks

There's been no change to the sync functionality, so every new or changed file will be queued for synschronization. It can indeed lead to conflicts that will need to be resolved manually, all depending on the frequency of updates.
