Activation Key already in use

  HELP!  My son gave me back my Emachine that I let him borrow.  Windows was broke, okay no problem... I  had to change out the HDD and did a reload. NOW Here is whats getting me to the point I want to throw this thing right out the window.  The Product Key IS FOR This MACHINE. It Keeps Telling me  Key is in use. WELL NO DUH... IT's my machine.  I even tried pulling the cmos battery to reset to factory default without no luck.  IS THERE ANY WAY I can get this fixed without having to buy another Product Key???
