Mirror OS System Drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have 2 160GB WD Caviar Black drives. One will hold the OS and the other I would like to mirror using WHS 2011.  Can I do this?

  • The only way you can mirror "using WHS 2011" is by using Windows' native disk mirroring.  Here is an article with general information:

    http://www.techotopia.com/index.php/Creating_and_Managing_Windows_Server_2008_Mirrored_%28RAID_1%29_Volumes

And here's a KB from Microsoft about mirroring the boot volume in Windows Server 2003 (some of which may apply to Server 2008):

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323432

However, there are a lot complexities around recovery when mirroring the boot drive, and RAID is no substitute for backup.  Whether you end up using some kind or mirroring or not, I strongly urge you to make use of Server Backup in WHS 2011 to backup up your OS disk and boot partitions.  WHS makes it a breeze to recover from a proper backup.

  • Hi,

I think you have to build up RAID to make it possible. As we know, there are many kinds of RAIDs. Different kinds of RAIDs could provide different levels for data protection, fault tolerance etc.

For detaile info about RAID, you could do a deep research to find out your own best practice.
