"Backup service not running", help!

Question
-
My WHS has been running fine for months, backing up a number of computers. Suddenly it decides to not run backup service. I've gone to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946339. But I can't fix the problem.
* I've rebooted, doesn't help
* I've manually started the Backup Service, but it stops after a few seconds again
* I've used WHS ToolKit 1.0 to Reset backup database, fails because backup service isn't running
* In WHS Settings, I go to Backup and click Repair, can't run because backup service isn't running
I can see all 6 drives in my system. No HD is marked Unhealthy. I can see temperatures from them all using Disk Management addin. I can see files on all 6 drives in the Duplication Info addin.
Is this a HD problem? I can't remove drives because I don't have disk space for it. It seems everything else on the server works fine, web site, file access etc.
From WHS event logs:
Unexpected error 0x45d from ReadFile on D:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\{43383AC3-6FDA-4F4F-B313-278891A9D86B}.Machine.configdat: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

RealPjotr said:The I/O device error is indicative of failing hardware, probably a disk drive. You can try running CHKDSK /r on each partition or drive in your server to find out which disk is failing, but you should plan to replace a disk now.

The following two commands, when run one after the other in a command prompt, will run chkdsk on every drive in your server:chkdsk /x /r
will run chkdsk on your primary drive (you may need a reboot for this; you'll be told you do if required).for /d %1 in (c:\fs\*) do start chkdsk /x /r %1
will run chkdsk on all your secondary drives simultaneously.

Hello,
is Power Pack 1 already installed? If not, you should do it.
If it is not a problem to loose the made backups of the client, you can try to delete all files in the folder
D:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}
via Windows Explorer from the servers desktop. Seems that a file is broken here and causing the backup service to crash.
If you cannot delete all files in that folder, there may be invalid reparse points. In this case open a command prompt and enter following commands:
d:
cd \folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}
for %i in (*) do fsutil reparsepoint delete %i
Check also, if there are more files in
d:\DE\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\
c:\fs\<drive>\DE\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\
and delete the files as well. You need to enable Show hidden files in folder options to see those folders.
After finishing this perform a reboot on the server. The backup service should now be able to start again and the backups will be performed from the scratch.
You should also check the event log of the server, if there are disk related errors shown.

Just a note on Ken's instructions: You will most likely receive file conflict warnings after chkdsk is done. This is normal. Reboot the server and these should go away. Chkdsk has to unmount the drive and this causes the file conflict warnings.
Thank you

I have PP1 installed.
I did chkdsk /x /r, it said it would run at next reboot, so I rebooted. The server came up quite fast, not taking the time I would expect from a chkdsk. Nothing has changed, same errors. How can I see if the chkdsk even ran? Did it encounter an error even?Saturday, September 20, 2008 5:50 PM -

You should be able to see the results in the event logs on the server.Saturday, September 20, 2008 9:57 PMModerator -
First, I remove everything in that directory and from there I could start using Backups again.
Then I ran chkdsk on the data drives too. After this, I got about ten messages in the event log:
The device, \Device\Harddisk0, has a bad block.
How do I know which disk this is?Sunday, September 21, 2008 2:06 PM -
Check the following KB article:
