granted this gateway has had blue screen problems(garbled text) with both xp and vista, however vista usually gives the unauthorized lockout.
my only good recoverable version of vista now will load vista but the next reboot will find a corrupted index for msconfi.exe.mu1 and then give the unauthorized error.
any sugguestion to make vista work?

Hello mbtt,
In your Diagnostic Report, you will see the lines:
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\Slsvc.exe[6.0.6000.16509]
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\shell32.dll[6.0.6000.16513]
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\slc.dll[6.0.6000.16509]File Mismatch means the file(s) have been modified or have become corrupted. This can happen for a number of reasons, (including Virus, a Catastrophic Update failure, Hardware malfuction or so on). Vista is more sensitive to this type of issue because Vista constantly monitors it's critical system files to ensure they are not tampered.
Considering the other issues you are experiencing (in both Vista and XP) my belief is that either there is a Virus at work or the Hard Drive is malfuctioning in some way. (in my opinion, Hard Dive malfuction is more likely).
The reason I do not believe that the issue is caused by a Catastrophic failure while installing an update is because from experience, in those types of situations, usually only one file is affected, I have never seen the shell32.dll (a very importent file) affected in this way, by a bad update, as well as the fact that Vista is reporting other corrupted files (i.e. msconfi.exe.mu1).
You may want to go to http://support.microsoft.com for additional support options, but in my opinion, clean reinstall Vista and if the issue re-occures (without installing any updates or downloading any possible viruses) a Hard Drive malfuntion is pretty much confirmed. In which case I suggest changing out the Hard Drive.
Sorry I couldn't be more help,
Darin Smith
