  • Hello Stressless,

Thank you for visiting the Genuine Advantage forum.  Hopefully I can spin a web of repair for you Stressless :-).  It appears you may have a Windows Product Activation issue.  From the Desktop:

    a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.

    b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enter and follow steps to Activate over the Phone.

Also you may reference the following site for various Telephone Activation Centers:

Please let me know if this resolution works.

    Take care,

  • Hi Stephen

It didn't go quite as it was meant to, but Vista is happy now.

A little history first to document. Originally when I went to activate via the telephone method, I was getting no activation code at all (the 1 to 9? boxes were blank).  It would only allow limited use of Vista (IE only).

I spoke to MS Phone support & he got me to the stage of Vista logging on fully, but still unable to activate.  (He wanted to do an in place upgrade/install next - no thanks).

After reading this forum I tried the slui.exe 4 yesterday (I'm in Australia - so 22 hours ago) before posting here. The process gave me an 1-9 box activation id & I phoned it through & spoke to the nice lady in Malaysia, but after entering the code I immediately got a "Your product is not genuine" window popup.

Today I just tried the slui.exe 4 (but with a slight twist!). I searched for slui.exe 4, then right clicked the file it found up the top, & ran it as administrator. Instead of asking to activate by phone, it activated itself immediately?!  No codes to enter or anything, just a window saying you are activated?!?

I've just rebooted to check ..OK!  I ran the mgadiag.exe again & it says "Genuine".  What the? ... least its working.

Thanks for the help Stephen.  A tangled web indeed.

    Regards

    Len @ Stressless
