    How often does the backup cleanup service occur?

    It depends on the settings of managing how many days, weeks, months the daily, wekly, monthly backups respectively will be held?

    If that's true, why mine are kept for very long?

    And does this apply to clients only or to the server itself as well?

    I don't need all those backups over there, the last one is sufficient.

    Unless you have changed it, it is scheduled to run at 23.59 on Saturday of every week. The retention policy is set up via the Dashboard. This is the Client Backup cleanup not the Server.

    As I understand it, the Server cleans up old backups when it needs to create extra space on your backup disk.

    Backups (both types) are incremental so you are not wasting a lot of space by retaining old backups unless there have been a lot of data changes in the interim period.
