Windows won't recognize external drive in USB port RRS feed

  • Question

  • I plugged in a new Western Digital Portable Hard Drive into a USB port.  I get the message that it sees the new HD, but when it searches, it cannot find the software on the drive.  When I hit "My computer" this drive is not shown.  I've tried different USB ports. I'm using Windows XP and my Windows software is up to date.  also tried starting again with HD plugged in.

  • Are you using Windows Live OneCare and plan to use this drive as a backup?

The first thing I'd do is confirm that the drive is connected to a powered hub or back of the PC USB port. Unpowered hubs and front ports may not supply enough power for the drive to properly function.

The second thing, since XP apparently saw the drive, is to format the drive. It may be completely RAW or blank. Open Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management. Your new drive should appear, but there will be no drive letter and it will state that it is unformatted. Select the drive, create a partition and format the drive to the default NTFS.

Contact Western Digital for help if this doesn't work.

If you are not using OneCare, you're off topic for this forum.
