System Center DPM 2012 R2 scale out feature RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello together,

sorry but i cant select the right Forum so i post it here please move the thread to the right Forum.

i have a question regarding the design of a dpm 2012 R2 installation with the scale out feature.

We have a 12 node hyper-v cluster and the storage for the cluster is a Scale out file sever with 2 nodes and 3 shelfes behind the SOFS nodes.

We plan a DPM 2012 R2 backup solution for the hyper-v cluster. We want to use the scale out feature of dpm with 2 dpm nodes to backup the 12 node hyper-v cluster. We know that we must install the agents on hyper-v and also on the sofs nodes and tell the dpm agents on the hyper-v cluster that there are 2 dpm nodes.

Is it possible to use the DPM scale out feature with this solution?

I searched in technet and there is described that we can not use the scale out feature if the storage of the vms on Remote SMB shares.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj656645.aspx

Then the above described solution is not possible can we backup the 12 node cluster with 2 DPM nodes without the scale out feature of DPM or must we use a single DPM server to protect the cluster?

If we want to use the item level recovery must we install the hyper-v role on the dpm nodes?

And a confusing mention in this articel:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757866.aspx
“Recovery of a virtual machine to a computer that uses remote SMB shares” in the “scenarios not supported” section

what did that mean? Is a recover of a vm which use remote SMB as storage not possible?

    Thanks for your help!

    Best Regards

    Christoph
