Help - Word stops working in 10.25 seconds

Question
-
Hi
I have just installed Office 2007. When I run Word or Powerpoint the program closes within 10.25 seconds and a dialog pops up saying 'Microsoft Word has stopped Working - a problem caused the program to stop working. windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available' Then nothing - occasionally the Office Diagnostics are fired up. I have tried to repair the install, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the diagnostics don't usually reveal anything - but once they did replace some setup component.
Interestingly Debug View does show whats going on behind the scenes it reports the following action three times before either Word or Powerpoint close.
[RegOpenKeyX failure =[2]
This is obviously a debug statement that has been left in at obviously a point in the program that can cause problems.
Any help would be appreciated.
Bruce.

Hi
The penny has dropped...
I remembered trying to connect my KX-P7100 Panasonic laser printer when I got my new Vista machine. I discovered that Panasonic had not provided new drivers for the printer (even though Vista had been in beta for two years) so I connected using my old machine and shared the printer from new machine. Obviously to do that you still need compatible drivers so I just got rid of the share and now Word and Powerpoint stay up!
Even though I never got a reply from anyone I think the postings I have made may help others, they certainly helped me!

Hi
I forgot to mention that the problem occurs when I was installing on a new PC running the Vista OS. This morning I tried it on my older XP system and all the Office products run fine. Therefore this is an Office 2007 - Vista problem

Brucie,
I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing and would like to provide you with some self-help options we have made available for our customers to address the issue you are currently experiencing. Please follow the steps outlined below as it could either resolve your issue or, if need be, provide us with additional information to determine the cause of this issue.
1. Ensure you log onto the computer experiencing the issue with “Administrator” rights.
2. Next we would like to confirm that you are running the most current version of the Genuine Advantage control on your computer. In order to do this please follow the below link and choose the “Validate Office” option.http://www.microsoft.com/genuine
If the above steps did not resolve your issue lets continue with the steps below.
I would like to provide some of the self-help options we have made available for our customers to address these issues. If you could please follow the steps outlined below the diagnostics Web Site will attempt to resolve the validation errors you are experiencing with Office.
http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/RunDiags.aspx?displayLang=enNext follow the on-screen prompts to resolve the issue if any of the checks at the above site fail. You can do this by choosing the “Resolve Now” button if it appears. If, after attempting to resolve the issue as per the instructions on the above site fails, please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”, you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.
Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.
1. After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.
2. Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.
If the issue still has not been resolved could you please provide us with the following information?
Thank you,

EDIT: Suddenly the problem went away, at least on my Vista box. Maybe the validation processes only started working a little later & a few reboots later :-) anyway, word seems to work OK now on Vista.
Org.msg:
Hello Stephen,
I have the very same problem but it happens on both my Xp Pro box and the Vista laptop. I just got my Office 2003 licence from my workplace and installed it...problems started right from the start.
But the issue is the same; Word crashes right after starting...not right away if I just open it, but after typing anything into it it quickly just vanishes on Xp, and on vista says office word has stopped working, looking for solution...and then nothing. I am this close to either buying the 07 version with my own money instead of workplace licence (I already have bought office 2000 pro as well previously and pretty much all windows licences ever released and this is the 1st time Office refuses to work on my machines).
I posted an online help request, but I don't see any results I could post here.
Cheers,

Bransfield,
From the analysis of the diagnostic report, it looks like Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2003 and Office Professional 2007 are both genuine.
For non-genuine office issues, please visit this website as this forum or community deals more with Office issues with addins or built in addins:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?d=1 or http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.office.misc&lang=en&cr=US
Also there is a KB article regarding this particular error message that might be helpful.

I hope this helps,

Bransfield,
In addition, the diagnostic report gets updated every so often. You can go to the latest version of the MSDIAG tool here at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 to download the latest version or just run the diag tool from the internet.
