Installed genuine Office 2003 - now what? RRS feed

  • Question

  • My Office 2003 showed up as not genuine, as I cannot remember where it came from so I bought a genuine, sealed Office 2003 disc (with hologram) plus Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity and Product Key on eBay.

I have installed this over my existing copy of Office but it says it is already activated and fails validation.

    What do I do now?

  • Hi Kevin411,

Typically uninstalling Office does not disturb or delete documents in your My Documents folder or data in Outlook data files.  However, it's always better to be safe than sorry, so why not backup your Outlook data file before uninstalling?

See this list of articles about backing up Outlook data:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/results.aspx?qu=backup+data&av=ZOL110

  • Kevin,

Please run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Test (MGADT) so that I may analyze the results.

By clicking the link below, you will download the MGADT.  Then click the Run button. Then click the Run button again. Then click the Continue button to perform the diagnostic. The Windows tab should show, click the Copy button to paste your report to the clipboard.  Then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum by adding a post in it and pressing Ctrl V (to paste the text). Clicking the OK button will clear the Diagnostic window. Here is the download link:

NOTE: The data collected with the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you. The information can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you.

  • Hello Kevin 411,

Here's a snippet from your mgadiag report:

It is reporting that your Office 2003 Pro is nongenuine due to being installed with a very commonly used blocked Volume Licensing Key.

Your Office Small Biz 2003 installation is not yet activated, so we can't yet determine if it is genuine or not.

Your installations of Front Page, Visio, and One Note are all showing as genuine, but according to the PIDs being reported (example:  <Pid>72079-640-0000106-55385</Pid>) these too are Volume Licensing Editons of these products--the "640" number indicates Volume Licensing.  This means that if you are the person who purchased a current Volume Licensing Agreement for the use of these products, your use of their Product Keys results a genuine installation.  The flipside of that is unless you are holding a current Volume Licensing Agreements for each of these products in your hands, they too are pirated installations.

Please uninstall Office 2003 Professional and any other program mentioned above for which you do not have a current Volume Licensing Agreement.  Once uninstalled, please restart the computer, then try to activate the installation of Office Small Biz 2003 a follows:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA011187761033.aspx

Once activated, please visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button.

Please post back and let us know how you make out!

When I uninstall MS Office Pro 2003 will it affect the data?  (in particular the Outlook data)

    Thanks,
    Kevin
