First of all, registry cleaners are unneccessary. They came into vogue back in the days of Windows 95 when disk space was tight and were designed to help compact the registry to save space. They are no longer of much use since registry entries require but a few bytes for each entry. Registry cleaners identify dead end entries that were used once (often by installers) and then not needed again. But the registry is a database so dead end entries have no effect because they aren't accessed anymore. The problem is that registry cleaners can misidentify entries that are still needed and then you have problems. Don't use registry cleaners. There are very good reasons Microsoft does not provide one when MS certainly has the technology to do so. The developers of registry cleaners make money by pointing out all those dead entries as a scare tacktic.
Your registry cleaner should provide a means to restore the last entries removed. Do so. Or use System Restore to recover to a date before you ran the cleaner the last time.
If System Restore does not resolve the issue, try recreating the Licensing Store:
Recreate the Licensing Store1) Click Start button.
2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
8) Type: net start sppsvc
9) Type: slui.exe
10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

After typing "net start sppsvc" I got "The Software Protection service was started successfully" but when I type "slui.exe" no activation dialog appeared. Should I try to boot Safe Mode first?
I tried System Restore to recover to a point right before I used the "cleaner" but I got the following message "This computer is not running genuine Windows". After this, I tried to restore the system to the point before using Revo but I get "System restore did not complete successfully. Your coputer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: An error was detected in the volume Shadow Copy Serice (VSS). The problem ocurred while trying to contact VSS writers. Verify that the Event System service and the VSS service are running and check for associated errors in the event logs. (0x80042318)..."
Thanks in advance for your help.

This error is one we've not had too much success with in the forums - but it would be nice to find both cause and cure. Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following commands - post the results in your response (use the instructions below for assistance)ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\slui.exeICACLS C:\Windows\System32\en-US\slui.exe.muiREG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\AppID\slui.exeREG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\AppID\slui.exeREG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\GenuineApps\{55c92734-d682-4d71-983e-d6ec3f16059f}"REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\AppID\slui.exeHere are some instructions to maike life easier :)1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... Thanks a lot.
Well, that was a bust! :(Everything except the MGADiag looked normal.I don't really have any idea where to look now.I'm quite happy to continue with a hunt-and-peck attempt to solve the problem, but it could take a long time. You really have two choices at this point (assuming you don't want to continue with my assistance).1) contact WGA support for assistance (I suspect that they will advise you to do a repair or full reinstall)or2) a repair install. (and if that fails, a full reinstall)Your choiceWGA Support can be found here-North America: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_genadv_master?ws=support&ws=support#tab4
Outside North America:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support#tab0
Please let us know if (and how) MS manage to repair the problem without a repair install of the OS - it would be useful for future reference!

Well thanks I will try to contact WGA but if you get any other idea on what to do, I would like you to post it.
I will let you know how WGA proceeded with my problem.
Thanks again for your help and let me know if you figure out something else.

I'll keep trying to repro the problem - If I manage it (I'm close but no gold stars yet!) I'll be back.

Got an idea over here...
A good way to know exactly what happen with the registry would be repeating all the steps I took. Which were:
1) Installed "Revo Uninstaller"
2) Uninstalled "Windows Live Essentials" (using "Revo Uninstaller")
At this point right before I clicked on "uninstall" this program listed a lot of checkboxes with content and its location that was going to delete, so pretty much you can figure out exactly what registry it removed.
Should I install it again and check what did it deleted?

I wouldn't :)Repeating the process may simply make the problem worse.Does Revo have an Undo option? - or a listing of changes made? (if the latter, please upload it to your public SkyDrive and post a link.

I uninstalled Revo since the problem started.
So the only way to check what it did would be re-installing and checking what would it change... I guess I'm gonna take te risk to see what exactly it changes but obviously not perform any change.Saturday, June 2, 2012 6:37 PM -
