I tried to demote a backup controller using dcpromo /forceremove and was told that it would make the whole domain unstable.I tried to join the domain again but had problem rejoining with an error that the name "XXX" already exist in the the domain.I
was able to join the domain only after deleting that computer name "XXX" in the primary domain controller active directory controllers list. One thing that I noticed is that the DC "XXX" does not appear in the controllers list in
the primary DC controllers list. I was told that this will cause replication problem and the only way to fix it is to blow away everything from machine "XXX" and re-install back windows 2003 and also fix the issues on other remaining DCs.
Is this really true and there's no work around it?
