windows 7 activation failed after motherboard, graphics card and processor upgrade. How do I reactivate with new hardware? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Windows 7 Home Premium with 3 licenses associated with it.  I have two desktops and one laptop with my copy of Windows 7 installed.  I also have the installation ID key and cds for my Windows 7 Home Premium.

I recently upgraded the motherboard, cpu and graphics card on both of my desktops.  Now both will not activate.  I tried the automated activation method and it did not work.  The automation tool stated my windows has exceeded my licensing (or something very close to that).  I assume it is talking about my 3 licenses the windows cd came with.  I attached the MGAdiag for one of the desktops below.  How do I deactivate from my old desktop build and reactivate with my new desktop build?

  • Okay, for others who may have this problem.  Call Microsoft windows activation at: 1-(888) 571-2048.

It will help to have the nine, six digit, product installation id numbers available before you call (this is not your activation key you purchased with the software).  Click your start button.  Type "slui 4" (without quotes) and hit enter.  A box will appear and you follow through with filling in the information that applies to you.  However; the customer service rep can tell you how to get this number if you don't already know or cant get to the numbers.  Follow their instructions and you should be able to reactivate windows.  It worked for me.

  • It appears as if MS opted not to apply the strict rules for use of the Family Pack Upgrade license in your case - well done!

In all cases of doubt, it is recommended procedure to contact your local activation center, and thrash the problem out with them.
