Live One Care Installation Error #0020-80070643 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just reinstalled Vista Home Premium due to an infection by Security Tools. Everything seems to be going into place except that in trying to load backup files I am required to reinstall Live One Care. The installation is not working. I get error #0020-80070643. Anyone know of a solution? Thanks

  • Try running the install cleanup tool - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecareinstallandactivate/thread/399071e2-49dc-4767-932d-d261e3965943 then try to install One Care. If the installation fails again with the 0020 error please contact support. • I appreciate the forum help but have yet to solve my problem. I guess I should have made it plain that the issue arose because I could not use restore discs that were produced under Live One Care. I have tried or will try all forum and MS supplied instructions to no avail. I am not as concerned about reinstalling LOC as I am getting my backup back. Thanks.

  • If you only want to restore your One Care backups you can use the One Care Backup restore tool - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecarebackupandrestore/thread/e5d686c8-762b-4b22-bc08-bfb93f911e57

  • That is precisely the problem. My computer will not reinstall the  backup discs unless it has One Care installed. One Care won't install. I get a message that backup was produced under One Care and must have One Care to reinstall. The proverbial Catch 22 or the familiar loop operation that requires wire cutters to solve.

The tool is a program to allow you to access the OneCare backups without fully installing OneCare.

You should still run the cleanup tool as that will usually resolve the error you are encountering when attempting to reinstall OneCare.

In the worst case, you can access your backups using WinZip or other 3rd party utility and extract the zipped files. It may be painful if you have many files to restore and it will be very manual.
If OneCare has split a large file into multiple .zip files, you will need to extract all of the parts, rename them with extensions .000, .001, .002, etc and use another (free) tool to rejoin the parts:  http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/

Alternatively, you can contact support for help with any part of this problem.

  • Thanks to all. I guess I will have to go to support. Thing is, I will probably just wind up salvaging the few pieces I really need in one way or another. This forum is outstanding and I thank Jim and all. MS has always been good to me and this is the first time in nearly 30 years of using Bill's products that I have been completely outdone.

  • Best of luck to you, jerfir. If you can return to let us know what Support did to resolve the issue, I'd appreciate it.
Did you run the OneCare cleanup tool and what were the results?
Did you try installing the OneCare Restore Tool, by the way? Did it return the same error?
