Hi,
About your question on CRM and Outlook issues have a look at these articles:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/crm/archive/2011/04/14/getting-crm-data-into-outlook.aspx
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg328205.aspx
http://www.powerobjects.com/blog/2012/05/03/going-offline-with-microsoft-crm-2011-outlook-client/
About the performance, I have deployed the Outlook and CRM integration in small and medium sized organizations, and no performance issues have been seen.
And, about the Outlook and the data handling of Express SQL you could ask it in related forums.
If the answer helped you, remember to mark it as answer.

What detailed reference information do you need, and for what purpose?
There are lots of white papers published by Microsoft about CRM for Outlook but I assume you are able to search the internet and have already read these. For example, the CRM 2011 Implementation Guide, etc.
Yes, if you synchronize a lot of data to the user's computer it can affect performance. That's why the recommended PC specifications are high and why synchronizing large volumes of data is not recommended.
