Disk Access Speed Comparison and Questions RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've got a few drives installed on my system and have used HD Tune (available at http://www.hdtune.com/) to measure the disk access speed.  Here are my results:

HD Tune: SAMSUNG HD501LJ Benchmark - PRIMARY DRIVE
    Transfer Rate Minimum : 0.5 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 47.2 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 2.7 MB/sec
    CPU Usage             : 2.5%

    HD Tune: SAMSUNG SP2504C Benchmark
    Transfer Rate Minimum : 35.4 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 71.9 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 59.4 MB/sec
    CPU Usage             : 12.5%

    HD Tune: WDC     WD2500JD-22HBB0 Benchmark
    Transfer Rate Minimum : 31.8 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 60.9 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 49.9 MB/sec
    CPU Usage             : 10.0%

HD Tune: Seagate FreeAgent Pr Benchmark -ESATA HD
    Transfer Rate Minimum : 3.9 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 42.5 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 20.6 MB/sec
    CPU Usage             : 11.4%

My question is why is the primary hd transfer rate so low?  The average read speed I have on this drive is 2.7MB/SEC which is terribly slow.  Does anyone have similar results?  Is this due to software on WHS (demigrator?).  Post results so users can compare performance

    Thanks!
