Unable to acess Vista - "An unauthorised change was made to Windows" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I can no longer access Vista Ultimate though normal boot after unsing Windows Update. I have had this problem before back in October but used a System Resore point to overcome the problem and then ignored Windows Update til now. Running Windows Update yesterday (without even selecting to install SP1) has caused the same issue but this time I do not have a working System Restore point (the earliest is 22nd Nov, but this still gives me the same message and will not let me access vista).

This version of Windows Ultimate came pre-installed on a Dell laptop which I purchased in May this year.

I am currently running in Safe Mode as it is the only way to access the Laptop.

Windows Online Validation returns the message reporting that this copy of Vista did not pass validation.

I cannot run "net start slsvc" as I am in Safe mode and it will not let this run in Safe Mode, even as an administrator.

I also cannot delete any programs to see if this helps as I get the following message:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

So to summerise - At the moment I cannot delete any programs, I only have access in Safe Mode, no System Restore points are any good, System Repair returns a message saying no problems found.

The results from the diagnostic tool are below. I have tried to include as much information as possible. Please help!!!!!!!

  • Hello Simon,

The core to your particular issue centers on the line in your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report which reads:

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\gdi32.dll[6.0.6000.16643]

This line means that the critical system file gdi32.dll has either

    a)     Been tampered/modified/become corrupt to the point that its Signature Hash no longer matches the Signature Hash listed in Windows Vista's System Catalog.

    Or

    b)     Been updated but the file's Signature Hash was not updated, in Windows Vista's System Catalog to reflect the updated file's new Signature Hash.

Windows Vista compares a Critical System file's Signature Hash with the Signature Hash listed in its System Catalog to determine if that Critical System file has been tampered with. When this happens, depending on the file that has been tampered, Windows Vista may show as Genuine or non-genuine, but either way, Windows Vista won't Validate correctly and may also exhibit other strange behavior.

There are no Updates that contain gdi32.dll so possible cause b) is unlikely.

To resolve your issue, we need to replace or repair the file so its Signature Hash matches what is listed in Windows Vista System Catalog. I can provide a couple of suggestions to do this:

    A)        Install Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&DisplayLang=en)

SP1 may contain an updated copy of this file which would overwrite the bad copy and resolve the issue. (Disregard this step since you have already tried SP1 and it failed to install.)

    B)    Repair Windows Vista using System Restore:

    1) Reboot Windows Vista into Safe Mode

    2) Go to Control Panel

    3) On the left hand side of the Control Panel window, click Classic View

    4) Double-click Backup and Restore Center

    5) On the left hand side of the window, click Repair Windows using system restore

    6) Select Choose Different Restore Point, put a check in the box that says Show restore points older than 5 days, select the restore point that corresponds to the date before you first noticed the issue.

    7) Click Next button.

    8) Reboot back into Normal mode

    9) Windows Vista should no longer be in Reduced Functionality Mode (RFM)

If neither of these solutions resolves your issue, the last resort, that I can provide, is to reinstall Windows Vista. But before you do that, create a (no cost) support request below:

  • Hi Stephen,

Many thanks for your reply. I have had to resore my computer to its factory settings (an option provided by Dell) and I am just starting from scratch. The earliest system restore point I had could not solve the issue and it was not possible to install SP1 in safe mode.

Hopefully it will never happen again!
