Can Not Install WHS Vail RRS feed

  • Question

  • I set up my server Mother board (Intel SE7520BD2), 64bit with 1 GB of RAM, Dual Xeon 2.8 Ghz, and a 360GB Seagate drive (will install more later when it is successful) to start off.

When I install WHS Vail to it I am able to load all the files from the DVD and Windows starts.

I select "New Install", then select the Disk Drive and check the box that the data will be deleted. then I select "Install"

Then I get a new screen saying that Setup is starting, then a screen that says windows is installing.

Before it gets to 1% the install fails with a screen saying "There was a problem during the installation" and asks for me to read the setup log or restart. A restart produces the same result, but here is the setup.log last few lines:

    [6/6/2010 1:11:36 PM  2e8] Successfully cleaned disk \\?\PhysicalDrive0

I would guess you haven't read the release notes, Bruce. You might want to do so...
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • FYI

I was finally able to install WHS-Vail.

The problem was that the driver for my RAID card was not installed. Apparently the install will fail if all the drivers (3Ware 9550-12 or any other RAID card or other device) are not installed before the install program starts to copy files to the system disk.

I did not want to install my RAID card untill after WHS-Vail was installed. Other Windows versions will allow the installation to proceed with unknown hardware, then the hardware can be installed in the Device Manager later.

A warning would be good to have before the installation failure occurs.

  • The issue with RAID drivers is that, usually, you're trying to install windows ONTO a drive connected TO the RAID controller.  So, if Windows doesn't know about the RAID controller, it doesn't know what to install on.

Any drive controllers NEED to have drivers available at setup unless they have nothing to do with the system volume.
