Office 2003 Pro OEM from Dell not Genuine RRS feed

  • The Latest Genuine Advantage update says that the installed version of Office 2003 Pro OEM on my computer is not genuine. This copy of Office came with the computer (pre-installed) when it was purchased new from Dell 6 years ago. How is this possible? Did Dell sell counterfeit software or is this a false positive?

  • Hello DMDombroski,

      It is not a false positive (the key being used id the one Microsoft licensed to itself for use by it's employees. It leaked to the internet some time ago and was Blocked by Microsoft from further use.) and it is unlikely that Dell would include office with a Non-genuine key being used.

      The most likely (and the most common) way this could have happened is you had the computer repair person (or a friend or that smart kid from down the street) work on your computer.  In the course of repairing the pc, you may have had to uninstall Office.  But instead of contacting you to get the proper product key, they downloaded the key from of the Net and used it instead.  Or they, thinking they were being nice, they may have "upgraded" the Office "for free".  They may not even have known they were doing something that would cause a problem.

      The scenarios I have described above are the #1 causes for an installed copy of Office to report as Non-Genuine when the user owns a Genuine copy. 

      the Anti-piracy systems can only Validate what is actually installed.  So even though a person may have a Genuine Office install Disk and a card with a Genuine Office Product Key, sitting on thier desk, if the Office that is actually install on the computer is Non-Genuine, Office is going to Validate as Non-genuine

      Resolution:

      Since the computer came with a full version of Office, pre-installed, by Dell, the computer would have also come with the Office reinstall software disks and the Product Key (in case you needed to reinstall the Office).  All you need to do is uninstall the Office using the Non-genuine key and then reinstall using the Dell reinstall software and product key.

      (Note: Uninstalling Office should not affect any of your saved docs, but it is best to make a backup, just in case).
