WLOC 2 Beta backup issue(s)

Question
-
so....here's the short version- I can't back-up my files???
details-
I've got my main PC (Xp Pro-NTFS)set-up as Hub, and an external 250 Gb Kaser (also NTFS) hard drive as centralized backup. The drive has since been re-formatted after being set-up as centralized backup location in a failed attempt at resolving this issue.
WLOC main page displays the warning msg:
"BACK UP YOUR FILES- One Care could not find your centralized device for automatic backup during the last scheduled backup. You have important new or changed files that are not yet backed up."
when i run the "start backup" this is the error msg i receive:
"OneCare could not back up files to the central Backup device. the device is currently inaccessible. Please make sure that the backup device is connected, network is available and firewall settings allow backup, then try running backup again."
I can access the drive and add, modify files on it.
When i attempt to "change settings" i receive yet another error msg:
"Cannot open settings- Unknown problems are preventing settings from being displayed at this time. Please try again leter. If the problem persists, contact support"
so here I am- hopefully someone else has had a similar issue and knows a resolution

I'm not 100% clear on the bug, but you may have an obscure bug that affects sharing and circles if a printer is shared on the PC hosting the share. If so, this should be fixed within the week.

Thanks Stephen;
that's pretty good- the PC hosting the share IS also the host for the printer aswell. I changed the "Hub" from my PC to my laptop for now and that seams to have resolved the Backup issue - however I still can't change settings in WLOC on my PC. Hopefully the fix expected within the week will resolve the issue.

The change settings error is with the main option in OneCare to "change settings?"

yes it is- it's the change settings option the appears on the page when you double click on the WLOC icon.Sunday, July 15, 2007 6:01 PM

Can you add to one of the threads in the General folder on the Cannot Change Settings issue? Thanks.

I am having the same issue. Added a USB external driver (4GB). I have no problem accessing the drive locally, or modifying files. I see that a Windows OneCare Backup folder has been created and subfolders exist for the machines, but they all fail with the message.
"OneCare could not back up files to the central Backup device. the device is currently inaccessible. Please make sure that the backup device is connected, network is available and firewall settings allow backup, then try running backup again."
Any help would be appreciated. I do not have a printer shared on the hub system.

In your case, I'm wondering if it is a space issue. How much space is free on the 4GB device and how much data is going to be backed up?

I'm having the same problem, using a 500 GB USB external drive attached to the hub machine. It seems to be working fine when backing up the hut, but not my laptop, which is connected wirelessly. Hmm...it looks like it worked the first time, doing a full back-up, but no luck on the incremental backups.

Correction it is a 400GB Harddrive, and it is completely empty

Thanks for trying backup.
Hi CliffBrooks, your first backup succeeded, since you are using the laptop, the firewall in it may be in the Public zone. Please ensure both machines have the firewall settings as home zone and try.
Hi eDBMDave - Please clarify, backup is failing on which machine. Is it the machine where the USB device is connected or other machines. Can you able to access any share in the USB device connected machine from other machine. Also, please check the firewall settings, as mentioned above.

I too can not get backup to work.
My hub machine is sharing a printer, as well as a USB connected external harddrive. I wish to use the external harddrive as the Centralized Backup Device. I am able to access the drive from the hub PC, via Windows Explorer, and copy files to and from it. However, OneCare does not seem to be able to backup to this device, from either the hub PC, where it is directly connected, nor from a wirelessly connected laptop in the OneCare circle. Both machines report that the backup device is not accessible. Firewall is in Home mode on both machines, and he drive itself is configured for sharing, which was configured by OneCare, listing the share as "OneCareShare716$". It reports the Firewall is configured to share this drive.
I can not backup to this external USB device, even though OneCare recognizes it as a Centralized Backup Device. Btw, OneCare did put empty folders for each managed device under a main folder called "Windows OneCare Backup", so it appears that OneCare has access to the device, but does not seem to be able to backup to it.Sunday, August 5, 2007 5:06 PM -
update:
I disabled backup, then reconfigured a local backup from the hub PC. It was targetted at the same USB connected drive, but instead of being done as the "Central Backup Device", it was done as the local G:/ drive. The backup worked flawlessly as a local backup.
I then reconfigured the same backup parameters, but created a "Backup Plan for All PCs', choosing the G:/ drive as the "Central Backup Device". I selected the same file types as my previous backup, then configured the hub PC to use the 'Central Backup Device' instead of the G:/ drive.
I re-ran the backup, and it gave me an error message that it "didnt have permissions, or the drive was not connected, or that the firewall was not set correctly".
Help! what is different about declaring a drive as local vs the "Central Backup Device"?Monday, August 6, 2007 8:10 PM -

Thanks for performing the additional testing and reporting your findings. Could you file a bug on Connect for this issue and provide the support logs, too? Thanks!
